Hiway Hilton #2 March, 2009
Adventures in Arizona
Lake Havasu City, AZ
150 miles north of Phoenix, on the Colorado River,
is Lake Havasu City, the new home of the London Bridge.
We didn't know so many snow birds land there for the winter.
Oatman, AZ
This little western ghost town/mining camp is on Rt. 66--
not far from Lake Havasu City. Wild burros live in the
hills around the town and they come in to get their
carrots from the many tourists who visit each year.
On the way over the mountains to Kingman, we saw a
band of mountain sheep (almost missed them because
they look just like the rocks).
Verde Canyon Wilderness Train, Cottonwood, AZ
38 miles of track laid down in a canyon along the Verde
River made a great afternoon train ride. It seemed impossible
to believe that it took only 250 men one year to complete this
project through the extremely rugged, rocky canyon that is
referred to as the "miniture grand canyon".
Apache Junction, AZ
Up the Apache Trail found us at the Lost Dutchman State
Park, Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat (for lunch). Dessert was
Prickly Pear Cactus ice cream (mmm good). On the nature
walk in the park we saw many of the desert plants (mostly
cactus) and a Gambrel's Quail with a bright red head.
Yuma, AZ
150 miles west of Casa Grande is Yuma. We were
surprised that is is a very agricultural area where
vegetables and grain crops are grown year around.
We visited the Yuma Territorial Prison, a real step
back in time. Did you know it was open only 33 years?
What a history.
Tempe, AZ --Spring Training
In between these outings, we worked at the Aramak
Consession stand at Tempe Diablo ballfield, the home of
the LA Angels during the spring training time of 18 games.
Bob cooked hot dogs and more hot dogs and Diana sold them
and poured beer. Pretty wild, huh? Quite an experience!
We head for California the first of April on a 2+ month
road trip without the Hiway Hilton. We will visit our family
and friends in Northern California, Oregon and Idaho
before returning in mid-June. Then in July we will go
to South America to see Kelly and his family. Will stay
for two months, returning mid-September. No more
blogs until after that. Have a great summer.
Life is Good!!
